Neuro-Inclusive Programs
Who does this serve?
Our Neuro-Inclusive programs are designed to meet the needs of individuals who are considered to be “neurodivergent” (i.e., Autism, Down Syndrome), senior citizens struggling with cognitive or physical impairment, as well as other individuals who may benefit from a modified music program to address different learning and sensory needs that are not accommodated by standard private lesson approaches.
Not everyone who is considered to be neurodivergent will need to be in a neuro-inclusive program, and some may do well in standard private lessons. If you’re not sure what program might be best for your loved one, please contact us and we will set up a free trial session and evaluation.
How does it work?
There are numerous benefits to percussion-based programs, including improved coordination, communication, sensory integration, cognitive development, and motor skill improvement. Drum therapy has also shown improvement in the development of self-esteem and social skills.
Our Neuro-Inclusive programs are percussion based, primarily using handheld percussion instruments such as shakers, maracas, rhythm sticks, tambourines, djembe and tubano drums, etc. With these instruments, we take fundamental principles of music such as note values (understanding different types of notes and rhythms), tempo (speed of music), dynamics (volume of music) and work these principles into engaging rhythm and drumming activities. Our goal is to focus on fine and gross motor skills, social skills, working memory, and most important of all, having fun making music.
Neuro-Inclusive Music™ is a one-on-one percussion and piano based music program implemented by an instructor with a B.A. in percussion performance as well as a D.A.D. Drum Therapy certification. This program takes place in our studios and is scheduled the same way as typical lessons, meeting once a week at the same time slot for 30 minutes. In addition to percussion activities, students will often later progress to learning note names and building chords on the piano in a rhythmic pattern, sometimes to music.
